Warmouth

Lepomis gulosus

Warmouth are large-mouthed sunfish with mottled brown bodies and several reddish-brown streaks radiating from the eyes. They hide around stumps, rocks and vegetation and feed on insects, mollusks and small fish. They can be confused with rock bass: warmouth have three anal-fin spines, while rock bass have six. Warmouth can also hybridize with other sunfish. A species profile does not establish local fishing permission; check current rules and access restrictions.

Lakes, ponds, swamps and quiet stream areas with muddy bottoms and vegetation; submerged wood and rocks provide cover.
