Yellowknife River Territorial Park provides a documented day-use starting point on the Ingraham Trail, close to the city of Yellowknife. It is useful for planning a river outing without assuming the entire riverbank is public access or that this day-use park offers overnight camping.
Sources reviewed October 8, 2026. This is a planning guide, not a live fishing report, legal regulation digest, or confirmation that a ramp or facility is open today. Dated notices are historical unless explicitly stated otherwise. Check current operator notices and fishing rules before travel. Official source links are non-affiliate links.
NWT Parks places the day-use area about 12 kilometres from Yellowknife along Highway 4, the Ingraham Trail. Its published amenities include a boat launch, washrooms, picnic facilities and a playground. Wheelchair-accessible amenities are specifically described as three picnic sites, a pathway and outhouses; this is not a claim that the ramp or every fishing bank is accessible. Use the park’s own directions for arrival.
The operator describes boating upriver toward a string of lakes, or downstream toward Back Bay and Yellowknife Bay on Great Slave Lake. Those are different trip choices, not a single sheltered route. Our recommendation is to decide your turnaround point in advance, carry navigation and emergency equipment, and assess the weather before extending a river outing into a larger bay. The park description is not a navigation chart or assurance of safe passage.
The park lists year-round operation, but that describes the day-use area rather than ice-free water, maintained winter launching or safe river ice. Do not use the operating label to decide whether to boat, walk or drive on frozen water. Follow the Environment Canada forecast and safety resources linked by NWT Parks. Check access locally during freeze-up, breakup and other changing conditions; this guide makes no current ice-thickness or water-level claim.
NWT Parks lists fishing as an activity but does not supply species limits or a complete river-specific regulation digest. Obtain the current Northwest Territories sport-fishing rules and confirm licence requirements, exceptions and local restrictions before fishing. Do not assume conditions or permissions at the day-use launch apply to the whole river or adjoining lakes. The operator explicitly marks this park day use only: arrange accommodation or a separately verified campground for an overnight trip, and use the city as a place to prepare supplies.
